Bright Future
My name is Chris Pech, I live in Inglewood, California, and I attend El Camino College. I attend two classes twice a week, math 80 and English A, Mondays and Wednesdays. So far I had learn a few things, and it’s chill not having so many classes, because I get to have free time to enjoy my life. My hobbies are skateboarding and playing guitar; I skate with my friend Kenny, who is also the drummer for our Grindcore band, TWITCH! I enjoy being productive and learning different things, my class had read a book called Ten Skills you really Need to Succeed in School, and it teaches me all kinds of strategies on how to become a successful student.
First of all, one skill to succeed in school is time management, one of my favorite tips; Because not only does this apply to school, it also applies to everyday life. It is very important to learn how to control your own time as rather being organized other than disorganized (Langan 75). The first step mentions to use your course outline, in other words to use the syllabus that is given; I see it as blueprints used to rob a jewelry store. The second step advises to hang a calendar around where you can see it everyday to have an outlook of what papers to turn in or events going on during the month (76). Thanks to the second step, I had never forgot to take my pet chupacabra to the vet. The third steps also advises to make a to do list. It is an important way to organize your day and to be productive with your time (78). Managing time is the best way to get things done and to be organized; I don’t like to say that I am busy, I would rather say, “I am being productive right now.”
Another skill to be aware of is improving memory to study, because it is smart to memorize things you hear or read that are important. In order to remember and understand any material in class, you must organize your notes so you can learn. Making a list with numbers is an excellent strategy, then testing yourself out with will help memorize the material. After learning some of the material, you must continue testing yourself by going back and forth in order to remember it effectively (106). Also using acronyms is another strategy in improving memory, such like using PEMDAS in math class. One important thing I had observed is spreading out memory work, because it is more effective to give yourself time period breaks so the concepts are easier to memorize. It is a smart idea to review information so you will not forget it. Rewarding yourself after having a study session will motivate yourself to study hard. Also studying before sleeping will allow the information to stay in your head (112). Before I go to sleep, I like to play Call of Duty, watch some television, then I study right before I sleep so my mind absorbs the information; I was studying math, and once I closed my eyes I began forming problems and solving it in my head. Another tip is giving your body a position to study like sitting down on a chair to be focused other than laying down being to relaxed (114). My studying position is observing my notebook while I skate to class before an exam.
The final skill that I am going to recommend is being kind, because being nice to others is respectful and the cool thing to do. People will acknowledge your kindness and may return the favor. Kindness will also work with animals, as an example, if you treat a dog kindly, then the dog will show affection and will be happy to bring the newspaper to you every Sunday morning. Despite the differences we all have, being kind to one another makes us realize that it is more important to disregard are differences, whether we are different ethnicity, making different income, young or old, fat or skinny, strong or weak, and to show each other generosity (205). We are all going through different obstacles in life. Someone may look all angry and mean, but they can just be having a bad day. We must consider that not everyone has it easy and some people have it a lot harder than others. So it is important to show each other respect and kindness.
